Yorkshire butcher offers free Christmas meals to Universal Credit claimants

A West Yorkshire-based butcher is offering free Christmas meals to people struggling with Universal Credit.

Dave Jones, the owner of D Jones Quality Butcher in Dewsbury, posted online that he would offer a free hamper worth £25 including a pork pie, turkey crown and pigs in blankets to benefit claimants who would not receive their payment before Christmas.

A tweet announcing the offer on the @djonesbutcher Twitter page read: "Anyone local to me who has found themselves moved over onto universal credit and will not receive any money until after Xmas please dm me.

"I can’t help with much but I can put a xmas dinner on you’re table."

The tweet has so far amassed 21,000 likes and almost 7,000 shares, with Mr Jones saying that "never in a million years" did he expect such a positive response.

Mr Jones previously gave away around £1,000 worth of meat to people struggling with Universal Credit when it was first implemented in his local area a few months ago.

"I could just see this was causing people real hardship," he told Sky News.

"When I realised there could be a delay at Christmas, I asked myself, how will these families eat?".

Universal Credit is being rolled out in stages across the country, and bundles a range of different benefits payments into one monthly sum.
